Because of the duration of daily meetings of the House, it is not possible for the Speaker himself to preside over the proceedings from 'gavel-to-gavel'. As a result, both the Legislative Assembly Act and the Standing Orders permit the House to elect from among its own membership, a number of deputy presiding officers who fulfill the role of Speaker, on his behalf, when he cannot be in the Chamber.
Currently, the Ontario Legislature has 4 such deputies.
Each of these deputies, in order of precedence, has all of the procedural authority of the Speaker when they are acting in his place.
